Message From Dr. Carolyn Rogers, LEAD Faculty Chair

Hello LEAD Faculty,

It is indeed an honor and a privilege to work with such a fine faculty. Your commitment to excellent instruction and learner success is  evident in the work that I see in your courserooms. I encourage you to continue to go the extra mile to provide learners with quality experiences.

This month I would like to focus on our dissertation and creating a quality product. Over the past two or three months, I have had extensive conversations with faculty members and learners regarding our LEAD template. Most of the comments were centered on quantity and not quality. As such, I felt the need to clarify some language in the document and to make sure it is understood that quality is our measuring stick for final products. The two areas of concern were about the 30 pages minimum for Chapter 2 and the 100 page minimum for the total dissertation.

In addition to the comments and recommendations written in the LEAD template for Chapter 2, I have provided thoughts that support my expectations for an approved review of the literature and what the final decision is based upon. Chapter 2 is evaluated based on:

  • Field of study in the literature and the issues, i.e. principal leadership, systemic leadership, curriculum, organizational change, etc.

  • What are the issues or theory and relevant literature on the topic?

  • What is the position of the literature in support, against, alternative?

  • Interpretation of the findings and conclusions based on the direction of the study, support for the argument, and contribution to the purpose for the research and reason for future research.

In my experience, when learners use the above bullets as a guide, the depth and breadth of the literature are evident, and almost always it is 30+ pages in qualitative, quantitative, and mixed studies. Bottom line, the goal for a thorough and complete review of the literature is that it is worthy of a topic selected for investigation, and that the problem will reflect a deep understanding and analysis of the literature.
With regard to the final dissertation, it is important that learners write in a manner that demonstrates their ability to embark upon scholarship in a field that shows their intellectual abilities and research skills. It is most important for the learner to have in-depth knowledge of their subject and that the problem studied is worthy of substantial inquiry. In addressing all of the areas as a researcher, quality is not equal to quantity, but ensuring that each learner conducts independent research that demonstrates his ability to contribute to scholarship in the field is the goal. In my experience, that is difficult to achieve succinctly.

Finally, I want to encourage each of your to continue to provide each learner with a quality experience. Timely feedback, awareness of processes and procedures and presence are just a few of the faculty expectations that drive learner success. I know you can do it, and I trust that you will.

Sincerely,

Carolyn Rogers

    Introduction of New Faculty
Ruthenia Jackson: Ruthenia began her career as a Special Education teacher working in both high and middle schools in the School District of Philadelphia, and later an as elementary teacher in the Cincinnati Public Schools. She has served as a school administrator in both the Columbus City Schools and Cincinnati Public Schools districts in the state of Ohio. Presently, she is the Principal of Carson School which was the first school of the district wide initiative known as the Turnaround School cohort to increase student academic performance, by focusing on closing the achievement gaps for regular and special education students. She was a finalist for the Dr. Lawrence C. Hawkins Educator of the Year Award hosted by Western & Southern Financial Group. In the spring of 2009, she hosted a Roundtable discussion with the Secretary of Education, Arne Duncan along with the superintendent, deputy superintendent, school board members, Cincinnati teachers, and community representatives.

Ruthenia obtained a Bachelor of Science with a dual certification in Elementary and Special Education from Westchester University, a Masters of Arts in Administration from Antioch University, an Administration Certification from Xavier University, and a Doctorate of Education from Nova Southeastern University. With her experience in administration, and a passion to mentor, develop and grow future leaders, she has begun the process to become an instructional leader in higher education at Capella University. It is her desire to work collaboratively to bridge the K-12 practitioner’s experiences with the scholarly environment of higher education in an effort to improve the leadership capacity of school and district leaders in the United States and aboard.

    Capella Training
Sexual Harassment: Faculty should have begun receiving information about completing the sexual harassment training. The course completion period is May 9-27 and takes approximately 30 minutes to complete. We encourage you to take this training early so that you don’t forget. Once you’ve completed the training, please email Melissa McIntyre (Melissa.mcintyre@capella.edu) so that she can keep a record for Dr. Rogers.

    Courserooms
Visibility: Be in the courseroom 4 – 5 days per week; minimum of one response per learner per week; respond to all learner questions within 48 hours; a minimum of one contact per week for dissertation learners; contact Lead or Chair with any questions or concerns – no surprises.

    Learner Engagement:
    • Know if course history and the reasons they drop
    • Summary of research of online learning and getting learners posted….put it into the courseroom
    • Use Skype or conference call information
    • Follow up for learners with at-risk learners
    • Choose a controversial article and email to learners and get them
    • Video conference with the instructor and other learners throughout the quarter
    • Focus on building relationship by more frequent

    Mentoring
SMR Process: The SMR process has already begun. However, clarification is needed on the process. The learner and mentor work together to complete section 1 and 2. Once the mentor has approved both sections, the mentor then submits these sections to CompDissSupport@capella.edu. Representatives will then forward section 1 and 2 to the specialization for approval of the topic. If the topic is appropriate, the specialization reviewer will notify CompDissSupport@capella.edu. If approval is not granted, the specialization reviewer will work with the mentor to help the learner to make revisions to the sections as deemed appropriate until approval is granted. CompDissSupport@capella.edu will document the approval and the learner and mentor work to complete the methodology section of the SMR form. Once the mentor agrees that this each point in this section meets the criteria and approves this section, the information from the SMR form will need to be cut/paste into the appropriate scientific merit review form. Then, the mentor will submit the completed Reviewer form for Scientific Merit Reviewers via CompDissSupport@capella.edu. The Scientific merit reviewer will review each item to determine whether or not you have met each of the criteria. You must meet all the criteria to obtain approval. The Scientific merit reviewer will review each item to determine whether or not you have met each of the criteria. You must meet all the criteria to obtain approval. The reviewer will provide feedback on any criteria that you have not met. The SMR will be approved, deferred for minor or major revisions, not approved, not ready for review, etc. If the SMR has been deferred, you will need to make the necessary revisions and obtain approval for the revisions from your mentor. Once you have mentor approval for your revisions, your mentor will submit your SMR for a second review. You will be notified if your SMR has been approved, deferred for major or minor revisions, or not approved. You will have up to 3 attempts to obtain scientific merit approval. Researchers, mentors, and reviewers should make every possible attempt to resolve issues before the SMR is failed for the 3rd time. If a researcher does not pass the scientific merit review on the 3rd attempt, then the case will be referred to the Research Specialists in the School of Education for review, evaluation, and intervention. Once you obtain SMR approval, proceed to write the dissertation proposal and prepare your IRB application. The methodology sections on the SMR correspond to the sections that are included in the School of Education Dissertation Chapter 3 Guide. Scientific Merit approval is required before IRB approval but does not indicate that IRB approval will follow scientific merit approval.

SEL Specialization Faculty Meeting Minutes - May 11, 2011

To: SEL Faculty, Carolyn Rogers, Greg Reynen
From: Carol Pasanen, SEL Core Faculty
Date: May 11, 2011
Re: Notes from May 2011 SEL Meeting

Present at Meeting: Bill Brown, Ron Dougall, Dennis Flood, Scott Hollinger, Kathy Mondell, Carol Pasanen, Carolyn Rogers

  1. Congratulations
Congratulations are in order for Melissa McIntyre, recipient of the Harold Abel Award and Ted Ray, recipient of the Red Carpet Award!

  2. Quarter 2 Update—Courses and Mentees
Bill Brown reported that ED7542 is being revised in order to meet NCATE requirements. He has been working with Melissa McIntyre on this.
Ron Dougall reported ED7550 is going well and there are 11 learners in his comps courseroom. One of his mentees recently successfully completed her dissertation.
Dennis Flood reported that the work on revising ED7554 and ED7555 is nearing completion.
Scott Hollinger reported that his section of ED7545 is going well.
Kathy Mondell reported meeting weekly with her mentees. Two have successfully completed their dissertations this term.
Carol Pasanen reported that there are 12 learners in the first half of the internship course this term and all are making good progress.

  3. Scientific Merit Review (SMR)Process
Carol Pasanen reported having one of her mentees successfully complete the SMR process. It was suggested that mentors advise their mentees to make sure they have a sound understanding of their methodology and data analysis procedures before completing their SMR form. This may mean contacting the Research Help Desk (Larry Reynolds—qualitative, Bill Tetu-quantitative, Adell Newman Lee) for assistance, purchasing an appropriate text written by an authority in their methodology, and working with a statistician.

  4. Dissertation Guidelines
Carolyn reviewed guidelines for chapter 2 of the literature review making sure learners address the theoretical framework that is aligned with the research questions, present literature from opposing viewpoints, discuss related studies that have been completed and gaps in the literature. The focus should be on quality rather than quantity even though we have used a minimum of 30 pages as the length standard. She mentioned that it would be difficult to address all required elements in a quality literature review in less than 30 pages. It is important that learners become “experts” in their topic and should be knowledgeable about the leading experts in the field and should be able to talk confidently about the literature that supports their studies.

  5. Attracting and Retaining Learners
The following suggestions were discussed for attracting new learners.
Scott Hollinger suggested hosting a reception at a CEC conference.
Carol Pasanen mentioned that some of our SEL learners currently in the internship course attended the recent CEC conference in Maryland and shared information about Capella’s program—there was much interest on the part of the conference attendees and some of the presenters as well.
Bill Brown said that he and Kathy Mondell attended a CEC conference in the past where Capella students were present in the Capella booth in the vendor area. They felt that several new learners were recruited for Capella.
Bill Brown also felt it would be important to highlight our NCATE accreditation if we attended a CEC conference.
Carolyn said that we would have SEL faculty representation at the next national CEC conference. We discussed getting Capella’s Marketing Department involved.
Scott Hollinger suggested making a Capella presence at statewide conferences for directors of special education.

The following suggestions were discussed for retaining learners.
Carolyn suggested contacting learners’ advisors when the learners are falling behind.
Carol Pasanen stated that it was important to find ways to keep learners engaged.

  6. Preventing Workplace Harassment Training May 9-27
All SEL faculty should complete this training ASAP and let Carol P. know when they have completed the training.

  7. Looking toward Quarter 3
Carol P. mentioned that ED7550 will most likely not be taught next term. Carolyn said it will be offered Q2 and Q4 in the future due to low numbers in the course. Carol will contact each faculty member individually about teaching assignments for next term. We continue to need dissertation mentors.

  8. Ed Academy
Carolyn discussed the Ed Academy project that will offer professional development for current school leaders. She is looking for faculty who would be interested in being presenters. Send her an e-mail describing the types of workshops or presentations you might like to give if you are interested in this project!

  9. Engaging Faculty
Carol P. mentioned that we will spend time at our June meeting talking about some of our personal and professional activities to help us learn more about each other.

  10. Next Meeting—June 8, 8:00 a.m. CDT
