Dr. Rogers, Dr. DeWitt, and Dr. Song Present in China!

Capella P–12 Programs Faculty Chair Carolyn Rogers and core faculty members Sam Song and Doug DeWitt recently presented at the 5th International Symposium on Teacher Education and the 4th Annual Conference of the Teachers College Cooperative of the National Teacher Education Association in Huanggang, China.  The conference theme was Teacher's Moral Construction and Development (Teaching Morals and Ethics in the Schools).

Dr. Rogers presented her paper Ensuring Integrity in an Online Environment.   Dr. Rogers paper presented the findings of a series of interviews that were conducted with several online instructors. Among the findings presented in Dr. Rogers paper, were the need for administrative support, the need for strong professional development, and the need for understanding the online medium of instruction. All of these things lead to a need for integrity in the online classroom. It is a critical priority in the virtual environment.

Dr. DeWitt presented his paper, Developing Ethical Behavior for the 21st Century: Thoughts on Transforming Global Education. Dr. DeWitt made his case that there are, in fact, a set of universal ethics and morals that are subscribed to by all schools of thought, religions, and societies. Further Dr. DeWitt made a case against cultural relativism and asserted that there are universal global ethics that are and should be taught in teacher education programs and to students in any global school system. The foundation for these assertions are the fact that what we know in Western societies as the Golden Rule is found in every major religion and philosophical school of thought in the world. The paper drew upon the works of Confucius, Socrates, Plato, Aristotle, John Dewey, and Howard Gardner. He concluded by presenting the simple truths presented in Robert Fulghum's 1988 work All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten.

Dr. Song presented his paper; Education Creativity–Based Teacher Program Design. In his paper Dr. Song laid out a model for teacher education that includes strong leadership, moral development, and ethical foundations. Dr. Song's paper looked to the future and made a strong case for bracing futuristic ideas not only in teacher education but in global education in general.

The 3 papers were well received. Follow-up presentations were conducted by Dr. Rogers and Dr. Song and Dr. DeWitt was invited to collaborate on paper concerning Global Ethics with the Dean of the School of Education From Huanggang Normal University.

After the conference the trio was able to visit some of the major sites in Beijing including Tian An Men Square, The Forbidden City, and The Great Wall of China (which they climbed!).

NCATE News & Press Releases: Duncan Praises NCATE and Its Blue Ribbon Panel at Release of Administration's Plan for Educator Preparation Reform and Improvement

9/30/2011 3:06 PM

Washington, DC – United States Secretary of Education Arne Duncan today praised James G. Cibulka, president of the National Council for Accreditation of Teacher Education (NCATE) and the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP), the new accrediting body to be operational in 2013, for his “tremendous courage" in producing the seminal Blue Ribbon Panel Report on Clinical Preparation and Partnerships for Improved Student Learning. Duncan said he "couldn't agree more with the recommendations of that Panel which include increased selectivity, accountability, and clinically-based preparation in educator preparation."

Duncan continued, saying that NCATE's work "set the foundation for us and helped inform" Our Future, Our Teachers: The Obama Administration's Plan for Teacher Education Reform and Improvement, which was released at today's briefing in Washington, DC. NCATE will unify with the Teacher Education Accreditation Council in 2013 into the Council for the Accreditation of Educator Preparation (CAEP) as the single accreditor for all educator preparation.

Dennis Van Roekel, president of the National Education Association, and Wendy Kopp, president of Teach for America, spoke at the briefing, exemplifying broad support for the Administration's proposal.

The briefing featured a panel, including Deborah Loewenberg Ball, dean, University of Michigan School of Education; George Noell, executive director of strategic research and analysis at the Louisiana Department of Education; Sharon Robinson, CEO of the American Association of Colleges for Teacher Education; Kate Walsh, president of the National Council for Teacher Quality, and Elena Silva, policy associate at Education Sector. Education Sector released a report discussing recommendations for systemic change in educator preparation.

Library Resources

Below are links to new valuable Capella Library resources. The first one is intended to provide library  information for new Capella learners, but it offers much information that might be useful to all.

Research Design Resources from Dr. Mike Worthington

I think one of the best books that covers research designs and some stats is by Gall and Borg (2006) Educational research: An introduction (8th ed.).

For good book on research designs and stats without the technical jargon I recommend

Myers, L. S., Gamst, G., & Guarino, A. J. (2006). Applied multivariate research: Design and interpretation. Thousand Oaks, CA: Sage.  (used in our advance stats class ED8123)

For a very good book that covers common statistical tests and provides the language for phrasing significant and non-significant results I highly recommend

Cronk, B.C. (2008). How to use SPSS: A step-by-step guide to analysis and interpretation (5th ed.). Los Angeles, CA: Pyrczak Publishing.

For a book just devoted to statistics I recommend the text from our ED8122 course [intro to stats]

Ravid, R. (2005). Practical statistics for educators (3rd ed.). New York, NY: University of America Press

Other excellent general overall texts include:

LEA Specialization Meeting Minutes - November 8, 2011, 8:00 AM CT

Attended:

Melissa McIntyre, Steve O’Brien, Linda Rodgers, Alma Rodriguez, Steve Hinshaw, Lisa Garcia, Jerry Horgen, Linda Crawford, Bill Wold, Pat Guillory, Sharon Ordu, Debbie, Schreiner, Phyllis Wilson, Ted Ray, Claire Boyce, Phil Corkill, Traci Smith, and Laura Trujillo-Jenks.

Q4/Q1 Update

Courses:

  • Census date was October 21st. So far the SOE has surpassed its loading goals.
  • The November start of ED8007 just kicked off yesterday. This quarter we only have one section of the course, which is a decrease from previous quarters.
  • Q1’2012 course assignments are being worked on at this time. We hope to have this finalized within the next few weeks. However, keep in mind that final course assignments are based on enrollment numbers.
  • If you normally teach a course but would like to take off a quarter, please let Melissa know this week.

Comps: There are currently 22 learners in the comp course. All of the learners have received their questions and should begin submitting their exams within the next 2-3 weeks.

To ensure that comp learners have a smooth transition to the dissertation process, Skot, Carol and Melissa have worked together to assign learners a full committee. This information will be communicated to faculty within the next week. If you have a problem with accepting a mentee or committee assignment, please let Melissa know this at that time. We would like to finalize all assignments prior to the end of the quarter in an effort to avoid changes in Q1.

Faculty Bios: The University is employing a new system for the faculty bios. As such, each faculty must update their Faculty Profile found on iguide. If you haven’t already completed this task, please do so ASAP.

Persistence Discussion (Faculty and Advisors)

During the remainder of the quarter, please continue to communicate with learners that have not been participating in the course at their course email, Capella email, their alternate email, and the telephone number provided. If there are learners having challenges, please work with them to find a solution. This may require communication with the learner’s advisor, the faculty lead and/or the faculty chair.

Please keep in mind the incomplete policy as we move forward, and remind learners of this information.

  • Instructors should not honor an incomplete grade request unless it is week seven or later in the course.
  • Incompletes should only be granted if there is an unavoidable and unforeseen circumstance beyond the learner’s control.
  • Finally, learners must receive an incomplete grade prior to reaching their 28-day deadline; otherwise, they will be dropped from class.

Faculty provided an update on their efforts and current challenges.

Course Development Process Update: We currently have several courses in the development process (course revisions and new course development) as a result of the changes that are being made to our program to support a school leader and district leader emphases. They are as follows: ED7542 (Corkill), ED5320 (Ray), ED7016 (Ray), ED7014 (Guillory), ED8812 (Rodriguez), ED7857 (DeWitt), ED7901 and ED7902 (Slater), and ED7852 (McIntyre). The last date to submit a minor revision for Q1 is Thursday, November 10, 2011. Please submit the completed form to Melissa McIntyre by 5pm CST.

Goal #1

Collaborate with CompDissSupport, Academic Advisors and the learners at milestone 1 to help learners build their dissertation committees

Goal #2

Work with learners and mentors who have been at milestone 3 for 10+ quarters to understand what obstacles to learner success and do what we can to remove those obstacles and help them achieve Milestone 3.

Goal #3

Work with the 20 active learners who are working on Milestone 10 to help them complete the dissertation process during Q4’2011.

Goal #4

Work with the 36 of active learners and their mentors/advisors, who have milestone deadlines that expire this quarter to obtain milestone extensions if deemed appropriate.

  • Discussion of SMR: Currently, there is no milestone for SMR. However, because of the impact that the SMR process has on the entire dissertation process, faculty requested that a milestone be created for the SMR process. This would validate the importance of the process. Faculty also discussed many of the positive points associated with SMR process. Faculty shared that the SMR process is time-consuming; however, it has been helpful for learners to work through problems at the beginning of the process prior to writing the proposal. SMR and IRB Deadline for Q4: The deadline for submitting an SMR or IRB for review this quarter is Friday, December 16th at 5pm CST. If you have learners that will be submitting these documents, please remind them of this deadline. Many of the SMR reviews that are submitted to the SMR team for review have been sent back for further development. One issue that has been raised related to the literature review. Specifically, reviewers are pushed for more details that support how the topics support the problem.
  • Mentoring Meeting: The next mentoring meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 15, 2011 at 8:00 pm CST. It will be facilitated by Melissa McIntyre. All mentors are encouraged to attend. The call information is as follows:
    • Int'l Toll:  1-719-955-0562
    • US/CAN Toll Free:  1-888-205-5513
    • Participant Passcode: 348314

Upcoming Colloquium: The next colloquium will be held on December 27-30 Orlando, Florida. We would like to emphasize that learners who are attending colloquia need to have full attention given to the colloquia content they are learning.  So, learners are asked to let their faculty know they are attending colloquia and to request extensions on their discussions and assignments while they are gone that week at Colloquia. This was something that was clearly encouraged by our Leadership.

Next Monthly LEA Faculty Meeting: The next LEA faculty meeting will be held on December 13, 2011 at 8:00 am CST. If you are not going to be able to attend the LEA meeting, please let Melissa know. In addition, please attend either the C&I or SEL monthly faculty meeting.

SEL Specialization Faculty Meeting Minutes - November 10, 2011

To: SEL Faculty, Carolyn Rogers, Crystal Jundt

From: Carol Pasanen, SEL Core Faculty

Date: November 10, 2011

Re: Notes from November 2011 SEL Meeting

Present at Meeting:  Bill Brown, Ron Dougall, Dennis Flood, Scott Hollinger, Kathy Mondell, Carol Pasanen

Meeting Notes, November 9, 2011

1.   Q4 Course Update

Faculty reported that Q4 courses are going well with nearly all learners making good progress. Dennis Flood reported that the revision of ED7550 is 85% completed.

2.   Q4 Comps Readers

Ron Dougall reported that comps papers for most learners are due next week, so comps readers will start receiving papers next week as well.

3.   Mentoring

Carol Pasanen presented an update on the progress of our SEL mentees (see attachment). In general, we are moving learners from the first milestone group into the second milestone group. Only three of the SEL mentees are in their third year, and all of those are currently in the second milestone group. Effort is needed to move learners into the third milestone group. Carol also explained that it looks like mentees in the future will move right into the IRB process after completing the SMR process.  Those in attendance felt that if this happens, it is important to have milestones aligned with the new process.

4.   Mentoring Meeting

The November mentoring meeting will be held on November 15 at 8:00 p.m. Central time. Melissa McIntyre will host the meeting. All mentors are encouraged to attend.

Mentoring Mentor Training Meeting:

November 15, 2011 at 8:00 pm CST

US/CAN Toll Free: 1-888-205-5513
Participant Passcode: 348314

5.   NCLB Waivers/Licensing/Accreditation

With many states working on NCLB waivers at this time, the SEL faculty discussed the related impact that could have on the content of our courses, textbooks, etc. Carol Pasanen also mentioned that Minnesota is looking at changing the licensing requirements for principal licensure. This will also have an impact, eventually, on SEL courses, the ePortfolio, etc.

6.   Balancing Multiple Section Courses

The SEL faculty want to go on record in encouraging Capella to balance multiple section courses, so that the numbers in the courses are relatively even—rather than having one at 30 and another at 15.

7.   “A National Study of State Credentialing Requirements for Administrators of Special Education”  Click here to download the article.

The article “A National Study of State Credentialing Requirements for Administrators of Special Education” was discussed. The following comments and recommendations came out of the faculty discussion.

a.   By every standard and category, Capella’s SEL Ph.D.  program is outstanding and fulfills the requirements of every state.

b.   Because most states require a Master’s Degree for Director of Special Education licensure, it is recommended that Capella add a Special Education Leadership M.A. degree. This could very likely have a broader appeal than the Ph.D.

program, and it could also be a feeder program for the SEL Ph.D. program.

c.   For the same reasons mentioned above, it is recommended that Capella add a Special Education Leadership Ed.S. program.

8.   Next Meeting: December 14, 8:00 a.m. CST

Agenda Items: Discussion of new dissertation template and related tools and documents; discussion of Q1 2012 courses
