Message From Dr. Carolyn Rogers, LEAD Faculty Chair

Hello Leaders,
As I write this message for our September newsletter, I began to
chuckle and could not stop laughing. I was remembering a joke
that one of our faculty told us in a recent meeting. Most of you
know Jerry Horgen, so the fact that he brought laughter and a
spirit of happiness to the meeting is no surprise. However, just
in case you missed the meeting, or simply missed the punch line,
I thought the joke was worth repeating, so here it goes:
There was
this high school principal, a real jock, training for a
marathon. Every day he rose early to run a 10 miler before
heading off to school. This Wednesday morning was no
exception. However, he knew that he needed to get to school
on time to start the day and to be in a first period class
for a teacher evaluation. Plus, he knew this teacher and
wanted to be as alert as possible, since the teacher’s
presentation always appeared to be in a very monotone
manner. When the first period bell rang, he entered the
class with the children. The principal nodded to the teacher
as he headed to the back of the room to get the best
possible spot to observe the children and the teacher. The
principal took out his observation form and began to write
as this math teacher began his opening in his usual monotone
fashion, "now boys and girls go to page ten and we're going
to do problems one through six..." According to the
principal, it was only a few seconds that passed, but he
knew he must have been wrong, because he heard a bell and
saw the children packing their books and getting out of
their seats. It was then that he truly realized that he had
slept through the entire class. He turned to the kid next to
him and the boy said, "It's tough ain’t it!" [ed note: see
Dr. Horgen's picture close to the end of our newsletter.]
While I laugh at
this true story, we are fortunate that at Capella our tone can
be corrected before we press the send button. What we write, how
we write and the efficiency in the manner in which we respond
can clearly address our effectiveness, thus leading to our
increase persistence. Persistence will forever be the driving
force in how we do our work for learner success.
I am sure you remember last month the major setbacks of
President Abraham Lincoln. This month, I would like to share
with you another president. President Calvin Coolidge used
persistence as the driving force in how he led our country. He
said,
Nothing in
the world can take the place of persistence. Talent will
not; nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with
talent. Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a
proverb. Education will not; the world is full of educated
derelicts. Persistence and determination alone are
omnipotent.
We cannot debate
the power of persistence. We simply have to continue to use it
as the driving force in how and what we do. At Capella we
understand the importance of persistence. It is evident in the
way in which we design our courses, respond to learners and
leaders, and even in the manner in which we provide substantive
feedback that support Socratic thinking and learning. We know
that it takes persistence to learn, to have high levels of
engagement, and to have a successful experience. It is for this
reason that Dr. Ted Ray and I have created a blog that will give
us the opportunity and the forum to share our professional
thoughts and ideas with others regarding our persistent efforts
as well as other educational topics. In creating this blog, I
was reminded of the words of yet another president when thinking
about the true purpose for us to engage in thoughtful
collaboration. President Barack Obama said,
When we are
willing to continue to have exchanges and dialogue with
others, and we are also willing to learn from each other in
terms of the good practices.
What I ask of you
is to share with other faculty in how you make learning in the
Capella online environment happen for the learners you serve.
You can access the blog at
http://capellalead.blogspot.com/
In closing, I ask that you join me in our Celebration of
Success for September. This month I take pride in
recognizing our accreditation efforts that were done in the
Leadership in Educational Administration (LEA). The work seems
endless in LEA. Accreditation work has been done for Louisiana,
Georgia and NCATE. For their phenomenal work, I salute and
acknowledge Melissa McIntyre, Phil Corkill, Doug Dewitt and Ted
Ray. These four individuals have spent more than 350 total hours
writing reports, completing applications, pulling data,
collaborating with other departments, team meetings, etc.
Through their efforts, we have submitted a state report to
operate in Louisiana, a state operating application to the
Georgia Professional Standards Commission (GaPSC), and a
resubmission of our ELCC district leadership application to
National Council for the Association of Teacher Education (NCATE).
I know this would not have been possible without the work from
the excellent faculty, and therefore the celebration belongs to
each of you for your due diligence in our persistence effort to
graduate Capella learners at a high rate.
Thank you all for your persistence in your courserooms and with
your mentees. Capella is a GREAT University
because of YOU. As WE continue in
our efforts to support learner success, remember, there are
three things in life that are real: “God, human folly and
laughter...We will never fully understand the first two so we
must make the most of the third.” What has continued to guide me
each day are laughter, persistence and relationships, learning,
and celebrations of successes. Let’s continue to smile together
because we have much in which to be thankful.
Sincerely,

Dr. Irene Singletary In the News!
Dr.
Irene Singletary was featured in the September issue of She Magazine
for in inspirational teaching.
We're so proud of you, Dr. Singletary! Here's an excerpt from the
article, and you can read the full article by clicking the link
below.
Everything about
Dr. Singletary inspired me personally and she became a blueprint
for the model teacher I hoped one day to become. She was so
compassionate and wanted every student in the class to succeed.
Dr. Singletary had this magical way of making every person in
the room feel special while still giving equal time to each of
her students. Her teaching style was so exceptional because she
didn't care how much time she had to spend on any one subject,
she would stay put until every student understood. Amazingly,
she asked that we let her know if there was anything we felt she
could do to improve her own teaching.

Persistence:
Tips and Strategies to Promote Learner Engagement
|

Capella Advisors are SO helpful in
making contact with learners and mentees who are absent from our courserooms for
extended periods of time. Faculty are encouraged to ask for their
help when our efforts to contact non-participating learners fail.
Here's a link to email addresses for all of the advising team.
Learners' advisor assignments sometimes change, so we are checking
to see if it is possible to include learners' advisors on the
learner contact information e-mails sent to instructors at the
beginning of each quarter. Below is a link to the email addresses of
all advising team members:

New IRB Forms and Templates
Including this
information again as a reminder—the new forms are mandatory beginning October 1, 2011
|
|
Kirsten Walters
and Nicolas Bodkin attended the August LEA faculty
meeting and presented information about the new IRB forms and
templates.
Introduction to the New Institutional Review Board (IRB)
Forms and Templates
On July 1, 2011, the Research Integrity Office made available
new IRB application forms and informed
consent templates in IRBNet and the Research Center. Use of the
new forms and templates will not be
mandatory until October 1, 2011. During the initial three month
pilot, we encourage learners and
mentors to provide feedback via our Research Center survey.
We'll make changes as necessary prior to
October 1st.
Changes to the forms were substantial, and intended to improve
the clarity of the questions asked and
the quality of the information provided to the IRB. Significant
changes are outlined below.
Changes to IRB Applications:
-
All forms are now in
Adobe. Response space is limited intentionally. Learners
are asked to limit
their responses to the space provided and the additional
comments section of each form.
-
Researchers may now
request exempt review at the beginning of the IRB Application. Please
encourage your mentees to review the exempt criteria
before requesting exempt review. The
Exempt IRB Application has been eliminated and will no
longer be accepted after October 1,
2011. This change is intended to eliminate confusion
concerning the Exempt application process
and cut down on delays in IRB review for learners
completing the wrong forms.
-
We have introduced a new
Records‐Based Research IRB Application to be completed
if the
study design utilizes only pre‐existing records.
Researchers who will be engaged in any form of
interaction with participants must use the standard IRB
application. Researchers whose studies
combine interactions with participants and review of
pre‐existing records should complete the
standard IRB Application along with Supplemental Form H.
Changes to Supplemental Forms:
Supplemental Form B: Field Test Procedures and Results
-
Previously this form was
used for Research Involving Pregnant Women, Fetuses or
Neonates. As
Capella University's IRB does not review research
involving fetuses or neonates, this form was
eliminated.
-
This form is now the Field
Test Procedures and Results form. All researchers who've
conducted a
field test should complete this form.
Supplemental Form D: Research Involving Child/Minors
-
This form has been revised
to remove categories of research, which, under the
revised SOPs,
Capella University does not allow.
Supplemental Form F: Request for
Waiver of Documentation or Elements of Informed Consent
Supplemental Form K: Certification of Translation
-
This form was previously
used to request a HIPAA waiver. As the waiver was rarely
used and
even less appropriately used, it has been removed.
Learners wishing to request a HIPAA waiver
should contact the IRB for more information.
-
This form is now the
Certification of Translation. Due to the cost of
translation and the fact that
revisions to instruments, recruitment materials and
consent forms are often requested during
IRB review, learners are now asked to submit English
language only documents for review along
with Supplemental Form J: Use of Translations and
Interpreters. Studies requiring translated
materials will be "Approved with Conditions" and
learners will then need to submit
Supplemental Form K and the translated documents to
obtain full IRB approval.
Supplemental Form L: Research Involving the Use of Deception
Supplemental Form N: Research Involving Cognitively Impaired
Persons
-
This form was previously
Pilot Study Results. Instead, researchers conducting
pilot studies
resulting in a change to their study need to submit a
modification form.
-
Form N is now for Research
Involving Cognitively Impaired Persons.
Supplemental Form P: Action Research
Informed Consent Templates
-
The informed consent
templates have been extensively revised to be easier for
researchers to
use and to improve the quality of consent forms to
ensure participant understanding.
-
All aspects of the
template are now at a 8th reading level for the Adult
and Minor Assent
Template. Previously, the Capella IRB mandatory
statement had been above the 8th grade
reading level.
-
The Child Assent Template
still targets participants between the ages of 7‐11.
However, we've
created a Minor Assent Template for ages 12‐17 for use
with that age group as many
researchers were using the Child Assent Template
(written at 2nd grade level) for minors as well
as children.
-
Mandated Reporter language
has been revised to reflect the needs of all programs at
Capella.
-
Basic instructions
regarding the Informed Consent Template have been
uploaded into the
Research Center and IRBNet.

Message to SOE Mentors from Dr. Adell V.
Newman-Lee |
SOE Faculty Mentors:
We would ask that you be
respectful of protocol regarding the Scientific Merit Review
Process. As we all become accustomed to this process, now is a
good time to clarify preferred protocol.
If you have
questions about research issues, there are two options for the
mentor.
-
The mentor
could email the reviewer and ask for clarification on
different points or how to make what is needed for the study
more understandable for the learner.
-
The mentor
could contact the SOE Research Help Desk and ask for
assistance in helping the learner understand what is needed
for the present study. SOEResearchHelpDesk@capella.edu
When you have
an issue, problem or concern about a Scientific Merit Review
that you feel is not being adequately addressed per above,
please contact our Faculty Lead for SMR, Dr. Larry Reynolds.
Larry.Reynolds@capella.edu
At times some of you are sending
messages to your chairs, to comps/diss associate Barbara Kimmel
and Dean Barbara Butts-Williams. Please refrain from doing this.
We have steps in place to handle your questions and concerns.
Thanks for this consideration and
for all you do for our learners. Your work is very appreciated
and we will work diligently to assist you.

discussion area (How often will you be in the discussion
area; will you respond to every discussion question;
will you post a summary of all of the discussions at the
end of the week; etc. Also, remember that at a minimum
faculty must be visible in the discussion area on three
different days. Visibility in this area is determined by
the instructors' postings in the discussion threads on
three different days in a unit. Additionally,
instructors must respond to every learner at least once
during a unit. Assignment postings do not count for this
requirement.)
-
Provide guidelines for handling emergencies
-

course (be sure to include pertinent information about
what cannot be made up (discussions can not be completed
on an incomplete agreement; only assignments can be made
up on this type of agreement)
-
Other: Post any other items that may be pertinent for
the way you facilitate a course. For example, Melissa
uses private feedback so she includes information
related to this in her expectation.
-
Request learners post an acknowledgement of
understanding the faculty expectations.

End of
Quarter Update
-
Incompletes:
-
Q2 Incompletes: If
you gave any incompletes for Q2 that have not
been cleared up, please make sure that you
submit the grade change forms by September 25,
2011. If a learner hasn't posted work that was
agreed upon for the incomplete, please contact
them ASAP to remind them that the work must be
submitted by the last day of this quarter. The
grade change form can be found on i-Guide under
Academic Resources.
-
Q3 Incompletes: If
you have learners who will need an incomplete
for Q3, please remind them that they must
complete the request for an incomplete form on
i-Guide. Once this has been submitted, it is
automatically sent to Capella for processing.
After the incomplete form has been received,
faculty will be notified of the learner's
request. The instructor can then determine if an
incomplete will be granted. If an incomplete is
granted, tell learners where they should submit
the missing work. You are encouraged to have
learners submit work in the courseroom. If this
option is chosen, be sure to remind the learner
that their course will be removed from their
home i-Guide page once the course ends and
listed with their previous courses. As such,
they will have to go to the area for their
previous courses to gain access to the course
after it ends. Also, provide them with a due
date for turning in the remainder of the work
and let them know when you will be completing
the Grade Change form. If a learner is granted
an incomplete, he/she can only complete
assignments that are missing. Discussion
questions cannot be included in the tasks that
learners are allowed to make up with an
incomplete.
-
Posting Grades: Friday, September 16, 2011 is
the last day of the quarter. The grading window opens on
September 14, 2011 and closes on September 25, 2011.
Please make sure that all final grades are posted on
time. Also, please be sure to follow the school's
grading guidelines when submitting grades other than an
A, B, or C. They are:

A learner's course work does not demonstrate
mastery of the published competencies or does
not meet course expectations as described in the
course syllabus or course learning plan.
-
NS (Not
Satisfactory): A learner's course work
does not demonstrate mastery of the published
competencies or does not meet course
expectations as defined in the course syllabus
or course learning plan. This grade is applied
to those courses in which the learner has
received approval to be graded on the S/NS
scale.
-
WF (Passive
Withdrawal/ failure due to lack of
participation): A learner has not
actively participated in the course.
-
WNS (Passive
Withdrawal in an NS course): A learner
has not actively participated in the course.
This grade is applied to those courses in which
the learner has received approval to be graded
on the S/NS scale. Extended grading definitions
can be found in the
University Grading Policy on i-Guide.
-
Significance
of WF and WNS: The administrative grades
of WF and WNS have been established to identify
learners who are unofficially withdrawn. These
grades are converted to an F or an NS on
learners' transcripts. The WF and WNS identify
learners whose financial aid needs to be
reviewed to determine if a portion of their
financial aid needs to be returned.
-
End of Course Evaluations: Remind learners to
complete their end-of-term course evaluations. This is
an important part of the process for improvement as an
instructor and for the course.
-
Submissions for SMR and IRB: IRB applications
and SMR forms need to be submitted by noon on Friday,
September 16, in order for them to be evaluated between
terms. If you have learners that are close to completing
these items, please encourage them to meet these
deadlines.
-
Availability during the Break (dissertation
courseroom & out of office): Mentors should post
their accessibility to mentees between terms in the
dissertation courserooms. Also, faculty are asked to set
up an out-of-office response so that anyone contacting
you via Outlook will know your availability.
-
Quarter
P-12 Meeting: The Interim Associate Dean, Adell Newman-Lee,
will attend the quarterly P-12 meeting on October 4, 2011 at 8am
CST. This will be an important meeting so please make plans to
attend.
-
Colloquium:
The next colloquium will be held on September 22-25, 2011 in
Jacksonville, FL. We would like to emphasize that learners who
are attending colloquia need to have full attention given to the
colloquia content they are learning. So, learners are asked to
let their faculty know they are attending colloquia and to
request extensions on their discussions and assignments while
they are gone that week at Colloquia. This was something that
was clearly encouraged by our Leadership. Currently, this
relates to First Course starts for August and September.

-
Irene
Singletary: Irene was featured in an article in She
Magazine that focuses on inspiring teachers. One of her
learners talked about her experiences with Irene as her
teacher. The article will be made available for everyone
to review.

SEL Specialization Faculty Meeting Minutes -
September 14, 2011 |
To:
SEL Faculty, Carolyn Rogers, Crystal Jundt
From:
Carol Pasanen, SEL Core Faculty
Date:
September 14, 2011
Re:
Notes from September 2011 SEL Meeting
Present at
Meeting: Bill Brown, Ron Dougall, Dennis Flood, Scott
Hollinger, Lynn Young, Pat Guillory, Carol Pasanen
Meeting
Notes, September 14, 2011
1. SEL
PEU Meeting
The SEL PEU report was presented
to Capella's SOE Curriculum Committee on August 24. One of the
findings from analyzing data from signature assessments in the SEL courses was that instructors are not often including
comments for individual scoring elements when scoring the
assignments. These comments, especially when the learner is not
getting all possible points, really help us to narrow in on
problem areas in courses. Please be sure you take the time to
include comments for individual scoring elements when scoring
assignments in your courses.
2. Q3
Course Reports
Faculty reported on the status of
their Q3 courses and their mentees and committee assignments. It
was generally felt that mentees made solid progress during this
past term with few exceptions.
3.
Q4 Assignments
Teaching and mentoring assignments
for Q4 were discussed. Due to workload issues, there may some
shifting of mentoring responsibilities.
4. Mentoring
Meeting
The next Mentoring Meeting will be
held on September 20 at 8:00 p.m. Central time. Skot Beazley
and Sam Song will facilitate the meeting. They will be
discussing the new LEAD dissertation template during the
meeting. There will also be time for questions/answers on any
topic related to mentoring. Call-in number: 1-888-205-5513
Access Code: 348314#
5. New
LEAD Dissertation Template
A new dissertation guidebook is
now available on iGuide. Skot Beazley and Ted Ray worked to
align an updated LEAD Dissertation template with the guidebook.
We briefly discussed the new requirements laid out in the
template. It is still unclear exactly when Capella will require
the use of the new template, but it is now available and was
attached to the agenda for the meeting. You may begin using it
now if you like. We will hear more about the new template next
term. We will look at the new template with the embedded rubric
at the October meeting.
6. Safe
Assign
Please be sure you use Safe Assign
for all proposals and dissertations.
7. Crystal
Jundt—new advising liaison
Crystal Jundt is our new liaison
to the advising department, replacing Grey Reynen. She will be
invited to future meetings.
8. Courseroom
Faculty Expectation Message
A list of required elements that
should be included in the Q4 courseroom faculty expectation
messages was attached to the agenda for the meeting. All SEL
faculty members should send Carol Pasanen a copy of their
faculty expectation messages prior to the start of Q4. All
messages will then be made available to all SEL faculty so we
can learn from each other.
