Dr. Skot Beazley's Updated Dissertation Template
Dr. Skot Beazley’s dissertation template presentation has been postponed due to Dr. Adell Newman-Lee’s Scientific Merit initiatives and new forms.
IRB Presentation by Kirsten Walters
Kirsten Walters of IRB attended our meeting and presented information about Capella’s IRB process.
Kirsten provided a handout that includes links to useful resources for Capella’s IRB process. Dr. McIntrye sent the handout to all LEA faculty prior to the meeting , and it is available here by clicking the following link: http://a1149861.sites.myregisteredsite.com/IRBpresentation-Walters-2-8-2011.pdf
Kristen highlighted some of the resources available via the links on the handout:
- IRB submission Assessment - useful to assure that all required documents are submitted.
- IRB Application & Informed Consent Tutorial
- Research Education Webinars – live or recorded sessions are available.
- Note: the current flow chart is not up to date, will be updated in the near future.
- Capella's IRB team is revising the forms and templates this year; new forms will ask questions of researchers that will help them provide information necessary to IRB approval.
- Capella is revamping the research center—mentors and learners can access the research center through i-Guide or through their direct link: http://capella.edu/researchcenter (easier to access through the direct link).
- IRBnet is a 3rd party submission tool; to assure adequate documentation and audit trails, Capella's IRB Board is currently developing revisions in the submission process. The Research Messenger newsletter will provide this information, and there will be a hotline for questions regarding the changes. Hoping learners will not notice the difference, since they will be going through the process the first time, but mentors will notice the changes.
- Kirsten discussed issues about how to facilitate a good IRB process.
There is need for feasibility assessment—what are the ethics of the study, scientific merit of the study; sometimes they see proposals that are not feasible (e.g., how much will it cost? phone interviews rather than face to face to acquire sensible information; sometimes unrealistic expectations regarding the time required, not estimating enough time; can they actually get site permissions, often a major stumbling block that needed consideration earlier in the process; instruments, haven’t yet purchased or don’t yet have permission from the authors to use). The new checklist is designed to help with conversations regarding study feasibility.
- Another issue:
IRB reviewers are noting an increase in topics that involve vulnerable populations (e.g., behavioral issues, bulling in schools, GLBT issues in schools). Regulations require IRB to assess the risk to participants, and in education we do this pretty well.
Is researcher adequately prepared and do they have expertise to do research involving vulnerable populations?
IRB is struggling with and trying to find a balance regarding scientific merit—analysis of whether benefit of the study outweighs the risks to participants. Benefits/Risks must be a reasonable balance, a “balanced approach.”
- Question from Dr. Corkill:
Frustration that many of our learners have is when we submit the IRB application, we receive auto-reply email messages that do not tell us specifically what to needs to be done (e.g., "is under review" or "please change"), no specific direction regarding how to change; have lobbied IRB to somehow say, for example, "you need to change this section or tweak this section;" learners end up calling IRB; this could be avoided if automatic responses were modified to be more specific regarding what needs to be done to attain IRB approval.
Kirsten:
Yes, we’ve been somewhat frustrated with the automated messages, too. So far, IRB is unable to let us modify the automated messages, so mentors and learners must go into the document that is attached by the IRB reviewer in the IRBnet website. Hoping the new resources will provide a more holistic process. Need an outline of the whole process from beginning to end, and we are working on this framework, hoping to have out this year.

Arizona Dissertation Recognition:
- It is once again time to submit a name to AZ School Admin of the Capella Outstanding Dissertation. This will be the third time the organization will be recognizing someone. Part of the recognition is for the learner to provide an overview of the dissertation at the Summer Conference. FYI, that is scheduled for Monday, June 13 at the Hilton El Conquistador in Tucson. Please get the name of the recipient to Karla Gable at karla.gable@capella.edu by March 1 if you have someone to recommend.
Faculty Required to Update CVs/Résumés :
- You’ll get an email from Melissa if your CV/résumé is not up to date. Please be working on updating yours and send to Melissa when she asks for it.
Scientific Merit - Dr. Adell Newman-Lee's Meetings:
Many have been attending Addell Newman-Lee’s SM meetings; discussion will continue, knowing that some are frustrated about how this was rolled out. Carolyn is working with Adel, trying to smooth out the process and make it more palatable for all.
Major concern is the IRB process; Kirsten was asked to meet with each school specialization. IRB is a significant roadblock for some of our learners—they can get stuck here for extended periods of time. Hoping that today's presentation helped assure us all that IRB is trying to become more user friendly.
Other Concerns/Questions/Comments:
- Dr.Claire Boyce:
I wanted to share some good news—just returned from Arlington Colloquium, first time rolling out 2011 revisions, and it was wonderful! It was so great to see the transition from a year ago; now you can definitely say that when learners leave Track 2, they understand their problem and research questions, and they know what they are doing. Was a great 3-4 days.
- Dr. Corkill:
The new Scientific Merit process is a University wide initiative—every school in the United States is using some kind of scientific merit review process. Key is that the individuals appointed to complete scientific merit reviews understand our specialization and our learners. We are working through this now, and we hope that our input will result in a workable process for our learners. Note: the SM reviewers will be paid a stipend for this work, so let Dr. Corkill or Dr. McIntyre know if you are interested.
Help Desk Reminder - Please do not overlook this valuable resource
The SOE Research Team is available to all SOE mentors for guidance, consultation, and feedback about research methods in proposals and dissertations. If you have a research question, contact the Research Team by sending an e-mail to SOEResearchHelpDesk@capella.edu. When communicating with the team, please do the following: (a) Provide the team with specific information about your question or concern and (b) Attach the source document, and summarize the issue in your e-mail to facilitate the review and analysis of the issue. The team will respond quickly and efficiently to assist you. Your questions can be about qualitative, quantitative or mixed design studies. The team encourages mentors to ask the team to review pre-proposals or initial planning documents to obtain feedback regarding methodological soundness or answer specific research design questions. The SOE Research Team, which is part of the Research and Doctoral Processes department, is lead by Adell V. Newman-Lee (Chair), and includes full-time faculty members Larry Reynolds, William Tetu, Michael Worthington, Grace Gao and Rebecca "Susie" Watts.
Next LEA Faculty Meeting: Tuesday, March 8, 2011 at 8:00 am CST
Dr. Skot Beazley will join us and we will go through further discussion of proposals and dissertations.
Monthly Mentoring Meeting
The next mentoring meeting will be held February 15, 2011 at 8:00pm CST (Facilitated by Dr. Alma Rodriguez). All mentors are encouraged to attend.

Is Relief Coming Soon for NCLB? NASSP Radio
|
"Will No Child Left Behind (NCLB) be reauthorized and amended this year? If not, will there be relief from the most onerous provisions of the existing requirements? In a recent NASSP Radio interview, Secretary of Education Arne Duncan shared with us what actions principals can expect on NCLB, his contingency plan, his thoughts on dealing with tight budgets and the policy of removing principals as part of school reform efforts."
